Study of the biology of the insertion sequence element IS1071 and of its ability to recruit and spread adaptive traits in microbial communities

Insertion sequence IS1071 plays an important role in HGT and has been known to incorporate many catabolic genes. These genes are then involved in the degradation of many pollutants. However, the host range of IS1071 and how it expresses among different communities is not known yet. Moreover, how it disseminates into environment under different selection pressures is still to understand. This project aims to study the genetic adaptation of IS1071 at community level by using different culture-independent and culture-dependent microbial techniques.
