Modelling and optimal design of additively manufactured heat exchangers

The desire for cost- and energy-efficient energy systems in a variety of applications is driving an increase in the significance of compact heat exchangers (CHEX). Despite their widespread use, their design can still be significantly improved. Numerical simulations can support the design procedure but comprehensive numerical simulations are extremely expensive. Therefore, investigating novel CHEX design approaches based on reliable models crucial. In this thesis, a model will be developed to model the heat exchanger core as a whole. Using efficient shape optimization techniques, 3D heat exchanger designs will be developed for production with additive manufacturing techniques, and optimized for their use in heat pumps.
