Negotiate your space: global narratives of women entrepreneurs dealing with social norms

Companies today are challenged by an increasingly diverse work force, often coming from a different cultural background. Diversity is not about one aspect of being different but entails a complex set of multiple identities simultaneously surfacing and defining the employee. As positive identities increase personal meaningfulness, social integration and organisational performance, this proposal seeks to activate the potential of minority employees to use their complex identities in constructing a positive work identity, from a collectivistic perspective. Two in-depth, contextualized studies will investigate the various identity resources and tactics minority employees deploy to advance their work life in relation to the social norms, structures and organizational support they receive. The model inductively built from these studies will be then tested and validated through quantitative research. Insights will be particularly relevant for organisations aiming to capitalize on their diverse work force by fostering complex and positive identities of their employees.
