How to measure capabilities and align expectations of first year students in Engineering Technology

The students in the first year of Engineering Technology are a diverse group. Previous research is available for instance on the differences in background (e.g. mathematical training) and its influence on study results and success. This PhD research will focus on the capabilities of the students, at the beginning and during their first year at university, with regards to understanding the course content. In how far are they aligned to the expectations of the teachers? Is there an evolution and if so, at what stage do capabilities of students and expectations of teachers align? Which instruments can be used to align capabilities of students and expectations of teachers quicker and better? The role of e-learning tools will be investigated, both as a measurement tool and as a tool to pursue this alignment.
