The Issue of Functional Equivalence in Translating Legal Terminology: Moroccan and Belgian Criminal Law as a Case Study

My project aims to investigate the issue of functional equivalence. This issue matters when rendering a legal text (especially legal terminology) from one legal language into another and from one legal system into another, which is a major concern in the branch of legal translation. This project mainly focuses on analyzing the terminological and conceptual systems of the Moroccan Criminal law instruments (Arabic and French language versions) and Belgian Criminal law instruments (Dutch and French language versions). I will specifically analyze the legal instruments transmitted between the Moroccan and Belgian Courts and judges in the form of letters rogatory, which are official legal requests for judicial cooperation concerning criminal matters committed by immigrants, Moroccan-Belgian citizens, Belgian citizens in Morocco, etc.
