I choose to be a human rights defender: the message from victims of the Chilean dictatorship to future human rights defenders

The application concerns a publication for the general public with the message from victims of the Chilean dictatorship for future human rights defenders. Victims and human rights defenders have played a crucial role in the democratic transition after the Chilean dictatorship (1973-1990). With the increasing age of victims and the repetition of human rights violations during the social protests (2019), the role of future generations of human rights defenders is seen as increasingly important to prevent recurrence. What can they learn from individuals who have continuously fought for justice and human rights over the past 50 years? The publication, based on interviews conducted in 2021, is a collection of testimonials from victims and human rights defenders and includes some illustrations. On September 11th, 2023 it will be 50 years after the coup d'etat and a 'memory boost' is expected. The publication will be launched in this context, in collaboration with local organizations.
