An integrated investigation of attentional demands and coding mechanisms supporting serial order WM

Working memory (WM) for serial order is an essential cognitive ability
for different tasks such as logical reasoning, mental calculation or
any other task involving the temporary maintenance of sequential
information. Many theoretical accounts have been proposed but
empirical data allowing to delineate the different accounts remain
scarce. Two types of accounts can be identified. A first type of
account focuses on the specific coding mechanisms for serial order
information. A second, more recent, type of account focuses on the
attentional demands of serial order WM. These two types of accounts
have typically been studied separately. This international
collaborative project combines complementary research expertise to
elucidate the nature and contribution of attentional demands and
coding mechanisms that support serial order WM, by using an
unprecedented breadth of behavioral, neuroimaging and
neurostimulation paradigms.
