Lifecycle:1 Jan 1993 →  Today
Organisation profile:The Department of Applied Physics contains three research domains. The Research Unit Plasma Technology (RUPT) focuses on the physics and applications of non-thermal or 'cold' plasmas. Next to the development of innovative plasma sources for environmental, surface engineering and biomedical applications, part of the research involves fundamental studies on underwater plasmas, plasma-surface interactions and microplasmas. The Research Unit Nuclear Fusion studies the high temperature plasmas occurring in magnetic confinement fusion machines (tokamaks and stellarators). The research is focused on plasma heating through electromagnetic waves (ICRF), advanced fusion data analysis, plasma-wall interaction and study of first-wall materials. A third research line is situated within the field of Molecular Modeling. Interactions at the nanoscale and chemical kinetics of industrial processes are being investigated by means of multiscale modeling.
