Informatics and Telecommunication

Department

Lifecycle:1 Jan 1970 →  15 Apr 2005
Organisation profile:

As a result of the different backgrounds of the members of the team, significant know-how is available in the fields of computer networks, artificial intelligence, parallel and distributed systems, management information systems and databases. 1. The digital TELEcommunications research group has been and is still involved in several R&D contracts with telecommunications equipment manufacturers. Most of them are centred on the introduction of new, digital, high capacity ('high-speed') telecommunication networks and the use of multimedia over them. 2. There are two main lines of research in the group of Artificial Intelligence (see SSEL). The first one concerns integrated system development methodologies for distributed, reactive systems and the second concerns the study of Artificial Intelligence learning techniques and fuzzy systems to model and control systems. 3. Design, implementation and performance tuning of general purpose parallel/distributed computer architectures and of applications on this type of hardware are the research objectives of the PADX Parallel and distributed computer systems group. Practical work is done on general purpose parallel computers and user specific circuits (FPGA) and combinations thereof. 4. Research is done on different aspects of designing and implementing information systems in a commercial environment (see BEIF). In particular concerning the organisational aspects, methodologies and analysis techniques, project management, computer auditing techniques, software quality assurance and office automation systems. Other research topics are knowledge management and electronic commerce.
