Advanced model-based design optimisation methods for mechanical systems

Mechanical design engineers are often faced with the complexities of generating a geometry of a machine part that meets a range of requirements from weight, to vibrations, to durability. Over the past two decades, topology optimisation has been demonstrated to be a powerful tool to generate these geometric designs under various design requirements. However, for many mechanical engineering problems key challenges in deploying these methods still exist due to the large computational load, design restrictions—like thin-walled structures—and the integration of the designs in an analysis for the full system behaviour. Therefore, this research focuses on the development of efficient topology optimisation methods that enable the integration in full system-level design for the improved design of mechanical components.
