AI in Industry: Learning and Reasoning for Automation

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is considered as the new electricity: it will be driving our economy in the future. Currently, it has been widely recognized that AI has huge unfulfilled potential, which has lead to numerous initiatives to encourage companies and organizations to invest in AI. A major bottleneck for companies to adopt an AI strategy, however, is the shortage of AI experts and lack of deep knowledge. This proposal aims to bring the DTAI research group's 30 years of experience in AI and education to industry. Its >70 researchers cover a wide range of AI techniques, but there is a particularly strong expertise in 'learning and reasoning' and 'declarative languages'. This is of particular interest to companies because fully exploiting machine learned models (e.g., from deep or probabilistic learning), requires reasoning about their behavior or output in order to obtain actionable insights, explain decisions, guarantee correctness or ensure compliance among others.
