Project

Artists' Lives in Dutch and Flemish biographical fiction (1918-2008): narratology, poetics, dynamics.

This project focuses on fictional texts in Dutch which centre around the life of a non-fictional artist. It aims at charting the main characteristics of Dutch and Flemish biographical fiction, its poetics, its critical reception and its historical development in the 20th century. To this end, it combines theoretical approaches from narratology, research into conceptions of literature, and literary historiography. In 2008-2009, I will concentrate on novels with writers and poets as protagonists: from Bredero and Vondel to Virginia Woolf and T.S. Eliot.
