Dative alternations in Spanish and Portuguese: the case of benefactives and possessives
This project contrastively analyzes dative constructions in European Spanish and Portuguese. I will concentrate on cases where the dative represents a possessor (U+2018LE lavo las manosU+2019 = I wash his hands) or a beneficiary (U+2018LE hice una tartaU+2019 = I made a cake for him). Possessors and beneficiaries can also be expressed by other constructions (they are said to U+2018alternateU+2019, resp. U+2018Lavo SUS manosU+2019 with a possessive pronoun and U+2018Hice una tarta PARA ÉLU+2019 where the preposition U+2018paraU+2019 introduces the beneficiary). I will investigate, from a corpus-based and cognitive-functional perspective, to what extent and under which conditions speakers of both languages make use of these alternating constructions.
