Doped Semiconductor Nanocrystals for Optical Gain and Ultrafast Modulation on the Silicon Photonics Platform

Using light instead of electricity to carry information is heavily investigated for its higher bandwidths and lower energy consumption. On short scales, so-called optical interconnects are built using silicon photonics by using the CMOS platform used in micro-electronics. By combining silicon with novel nanomaterials such as ‘colloidal quantum dots’, we hope to increase the functionality of this platform.
