End-User Visual Programming Techniques for Developing Sensor-Based System (R-9058)

Now in the era of the Internet of Things (IoT), configuring, adapting, and DIY hacking of sensor-based systems becomes increasingly popular in various domains, including smart homes and health monitoring. While engineers and maker enthusiasts build their own sensor systems or hack into existing ones, non-engineers have a lack of technical skills to program an electronic sensor system. Over the past few years, non-engineers in various domains expressed an increasing interest in authoring such systems themselves. Examples include, residents reconfiguring and fine-tuning smart homes, biologists prototyping new measurement instruments, caregivers customizing health monitoring systems or physical interfaces for people with special needs, and interaction designers integrating sensors in board games and toys. In this project, we investigate and develop novel visual programming paradigms that will support non-programmers to specify advanced behavior of sensor systems.
