(ESF7166) Labor market participation of illiterate migrants: in search of new strategies.

Migrants of the first generation suffer comparatively more often with literacy problems. This means that they are not sufficiently able to understand or use written or printed information, which hinders their participation in our society. Besides they do not master the language of their new country and they still have to learn this language. The combination of these factors makes them a very vulnerable group, especially with regard to their chances on the labor market.

Non-literate non-Dutch speaking people who want to work in Flanders, now usually follow a literacy course at the Centers for Adult Basic Education. However, these long, isolated language and literacy trajectories in a school context only lead to labor market participation to a very limited extent. For this reason, together with the target group and using the methodology of service design, this project is searching for new approaches to lead non-literate migrants who want to work to the labor market in a sustainable way.
