FLying Insect idEntification System (FLIES)

In integrated Pest Management (IPM) it is of crucial importance to detect pest (and/or beneficial) insects as soon as possible. Classically, this is performed by placing manual traps in the field. At regular time intervals, these traps are collected and trained personnel count the insects and check the species they belong to. This procedure is time intensive and results in a poor spatio-temporal resolution of the measurements. Hence, the sector is searching for innovative solutions that are completely automatic and can be accessed remotely. In a joint research effort, MeBioS and pcfruit vzw developed the basis for such a fully automated insect identification trap. The trap consists of low cost sensor technologies and an inventive design. The main goal of this C3 project is to (1) further develop a working prototype that can be accessed remotely; (2) strengthen our IP position by applying for a patent and (3) seek license deals with interested parties.
