Genetic structure and origins of Reeves's muntjac in Flanders
Reeves's muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi) is a Chinese species of deer that was released in the United Kingdom in the 20th century. Meanwhile, the population in England and Wales is estimated at more than 100 000 animals. This species is also kept (illegally) in Belgium, and since around 2006 it has also been illegally released and escaped from captivity in Belgium and the Netherlands. In Belgium, feral specimens have been observed in all provinces except Liège and Luxembourg, with an important population nucleus north of Antwerp.
The species has been on the European black list of invasive species of concern to the European Union since 2014. This means that all necessary measures must be taken to contain further spread and to avoid new outbreaks.
In the meantime, this species is being actively combated on behalf of ANB, and a DNA sample is being taken from each animal caught, shot or found. We use this DNA sample to determine the origin of each animal relative to known population nuclei or former illegal farms.
