Hybrid Quantum Dot - Silicon Nitride Optical Sources for On-Chip Spectroscopy Systems (g087317n)

Photonic Integrated Circuits allow to manipulate light (photons) on chip-scale. They can be fabricated using materials and processing techniques used in the micro-electronics industry, allowing for large volume and cheap fabrication. Unfortunately these materials do not allow for efficient generation of light. Therefore often an expensive laser is needed in practical applications. In this project we will develop a new type of lasers that can be fabricated directly on the photonic chip. We will thereby rely on colloidal quantum dots, a novel type of light emitters. These nanometer sized particles can be manipulated such that they emit light with a predefined wavelength (color). They are now already used for example in television screens. Combining these quantum dots with photonic chips will allow to make cheap and minaturised photonic devices with much more complicated functionality, e.g. full spectroscopy systems that allow to monitor air quality or detect diseases. The main challenges in the project are to improve the performance of the needed quantum dots and to investigate novel integration concepts for combining them with the photonic chips.
