Laser-based hybrid manufacturing for the generation of functional surfaces

The incorporation of micro and nano textures on parts surfaces is of increasing interest in many technical and medical applications. By tailoring the surface topography, added functionalities related for example to the wettability, biocompatibility or tribological behavior of components can be generated. In this context, hybrid processes combining additive and subtractive material processing methods present new challenges due to the specific microstructure and surface characteristics of the as-built material prior to finishing. In this project, response to laser surface treatment of as-built and polished specimens will be investigated and methodologies for finishing and texturing using laser micromachining techniques post additive manufacturing will be proposed.
