Project

Menstrual Tensions: Levitical Menstrual Regulations, the Story of the Haemorrhaging Woman, and the Formation of Early Christian Identity.

This research project will explore the early Christian Wirkungsgeschichte of Levitical menstrual regulations and the New Testament story of the woman who bled for 12 years. It will consider how Christians in the second to seventh century understood and interpreted these biblical texts and how they utilised them in their writings and in other materials. The dissertation will ascertain how early Christians used the selected scriptural passages in relation to the three themes of Christian orthodoxy and heresy; Jewish practices and Judaism; and women and women’s participation within the Church. Throughout the dissertation, attention will be paid to how the use of these biblical texts about menstruation contributed to the forming of early Christian identity.
