Opn Sensor and Gateway Technology for Rich IoT environments (SMIoT)

The Internet-of-Things paradigm (IoT) will have an important impact on our economy and society.  The physical world is connected to computer systems by means of sensors, actuators and networks.  Many stakeholders in Flanders can deliver attractive components and integrations to build innovative IoT ecosystems.  Sensor developers and integrators are confronted with problems that hinder them to play an important role within the IoT space.  Only low level development kits are available for many sensors.  Moreover, sensors are often developed for one specific application.  Finally, gateway platforms are closed.  This leads to expensive integrations.  A lot of stakeholders lack knowledge to implement new business models.  The SMIoT project focuses on cost-efficient realisation of rich IoT environments by usable gidelines and software support at sensor and gateway level.  First, we focus on smartphone and tablet technology as gateway components.  Second, we study how open software support can be developed for sensors so that cost-efficient monitoring can be done from mobile gateways.  Middleware is implemented in orde to access IoT devices from iOS and Android platforms. The sensor and gateway plugins are applied in two IoT application domains, namely smart buildings and smart bikes.  The prototypes show that cost-efficiency can be improved by means of open sensor plugins.
