Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) 2021 in Flanders

PIRLS 2021, organized by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), is an international comparative study that provides relevant information about (trends in) students reading achievement and competencies in relation to goals and standards for reading education. Every 5 years, PIRLS monitors 4th grade students reading achievement on a global scale.Flanders already participated in the 2006 and 2016-editions of PIRLS, a period in which the reading achievement level of the Flemish primary 4th-graders severely declined. Participiting in PIRLS 2021 not only allows us to explore how well the Flemish 4th grade students are in reading compared to students from other countries, but also to identify the degree in which reading performance has evolved over the last 15 years. Moreover, we investigate which student, teacher and school characteristics are related to (the evolution in) 4th grade students reading achievement.
