Retinal Oxygen Supply in Health and Disease

Examination of the retina provides a unique view on the blood vessels inside the eye. Failure of adequate oxygen supply to the retina is thought to be involved in many ocular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and retinopathy of prematurity. Together, these conditions account for the vast majority of visual impairment and blindness world-wide. Several diagnostic techniques have been used to investigate the retinal perfusion and oxigenation in research setting. The clinical implications of these mesaurements remain to be investigated. The specific aims of this PhD are to investigate the role of Ocular Pulse Amplitude, Colour Doppler Imaging, Enhanced Depth Imaging Optical Coherence Tomography and Retinal Oximetry in phenotyping glaucoma patients and to develop a portable retinal oximeter.
