Project

Seeing it in color: A usage-based analysis of color names in advertising.

This project ties in with a specific strand of research developed with
the research group Quantitative Lexicology and Variational Lingusitics,
i.e. a multivariate usage-based grammar approach. This approach tries
to provide a corpus-based,
statistically well-tested description of
multifactorial linguistic phenomena, i.e. phenomena that are
simultaneously determined by semantic, discursive, and variational
factors. Specifically, in line with the lexicological specialization of
the research team's previous studies, the present PhD project will
focus on the onomasiological
differentiation between near-synonyms.
In a more general perspective, this type of study may be extended
towards near-synonymous constructions rather than lexical items. The
specific
innovation the research group's approach brings to this field of
enquiry resides in two things: the use of advanced quantitative
techniques of analysis, and the incorporation of lectal variation as an
integrating part of the multifactorial nature of language.
