TRANSBASO: Enhancing the educational and social efficiency of the transition between primary and secondary Education: innovations for the field. (IWT643)

Transbaso is an interuniversity SBO research project funded by IWT. * The aim of the research project is processes of school and study choice in the transition from primary to secondary education research in the cities of Antwerp and Ghent. In addition, it is also the intention to develop tools that should make this transition more smoothly and subsequently to determine the effectiveness of these tools on a research basis.
Transbaso is an innovative valorization and research project for the Flemish educational context. The fact that school and study orientation processes are strongly socially determined is very well documented. Every selection moment in the educational career of children acts as a social threshold. One of the first crucial thresholds in the Flemish education system is the transition from primary to secondary education. However, we know little about these processes themselves and about the effectiveness of interventions and the dynamic interactions between the various parties involved in school and study orientation. Transbaso is therefore extremely relevant, both from a social and an economic perspective. Socially determined study and school orientation processes lead to social inequality, but also to incorrect allocations of human capital and to a structural loss of economic added value. Several actors involved in education (including school boards, social and economic organizations, school counseling services and the Flemish Ministry of Education) regard Transbaso as an essential and necessary applied research project if we want to maintain Flemish education at the top.
