Video consumption among young people: a qualitative study in two municipalities in the North and South of Brazil

In face of the accelerated process of TV digitalization that has been taking shape over recent years in several parts of the world and in the current scenario of media convergence, this doctoral dissertation aims to characterize the TV consumption practices based on a qualitative study with young people (between 15 and 24 years old) who live in the remote areas of two strategic regions of the Brazilian territory, the State of Pará and the State of Rio Grande do Sul, located in places far apart from each other, respectively in the Northern Region and in the Southern Region. The proposal is to identify the practices of watching TV and to create typologies based on the interaction flows assembled by young people with limited internet access. By interaction flows we understand it as the pluri-dimensional connections established by the audiences, in which different kinds of content (genre/format and live, time-shifted and/or on demand), providers (broadcast and/or online platforms), and multiple screens (synchronized or not) used in different locations and temporalities are involved. So, defining interaction flows means to map and characterize the associations of those components performed by young people related to watching TV. For that we will work with a diary study based on a deck of cards to be filled by the participants, where each card represents a specific configuration of watching TV. This allows us to build up the changing flows of watching TV based on the information provided by the young people in two places in countryside of Brazil. More than a resource to have an overview of the “television experience”, which is the goal of this research, this could be a productive way to map and analyse the diverse practices of TV consumption in contemporary society.
