Project

Words, not things. Analyzing the discourse of Pier Paolo Pasolini's Tragedies (1966-68) from a system theory perspective.

The primary corpus of this discourse analysis consists of the tragedieswritten and revised by Pier Paolo Pasolini between 1966-68. The research topic as well as the methodology are split up into two parts.
The first part of the project is of a comparative nature. Using a conceptual framework stemming from major contributions within the fields of both Polysystem Theory and Translation/Adaptation Studies, the study will shed light on the ways in which the corpus at hand, in its literary specificity and inherent innovative dynamics, relates to more central (both literary and non-literary) discourses belonging to the diachronic and synchronic contexts. Such an effort makes up for the gaps left by the existing academic critique.
The second part of the project is of a cognitive nature. The System Theory framework used during the first stage, is completed with concepts originating from (post-)hermeneutic takes on literature. On the one hand, the project examines how the discourses with which Pasolinis theater interacts, contribute to the cognitive potential of aspecifically literary discourse, how the tragedies in other words are able to incite the reader to assume new ethical, aesthetic, and socio-political insights. On the other hand, the project focusses on the tragedies specifically literary aspects, and moreover the ways in which such literary discursive techniques synchronically determine and diachronicallyguarantee the (historic) validity of the discourse at hand.
