Conclusion: why and how to resist punitiveness in Europe
Book Contribution - Chapter
This book has demonstrated that lower levels of punitiveness are correlated with more social equality, a better protection of human rights for offenders and prisoners, a balanced approach to defending the rights and interests of victims and a correct understanding of the complexities and contextualization of opinions about crime and punishment formed by members of the public. In this conclusion, the author turns these empirical findings into normative arguments for resisting and reducing punitiveness, on the basis that each of these factors refers to fundamental values that are considered important in Europe.
