How to manage ethics in the sports sector: a Flemish study on ethical sport policy

The sports sector, although in the beginning lagging behind, started an accelerated professionalization and commercialisation at the end of the 20th Century. This evolution holds the risk that profits or results will receive higher priority than ethics. On the other hand, a professional business orientation also incorporates management concepts for ethical behaviour as ethics and responsibility have taken a dominant position in the current economic debate and is nowadays seen as a legitimate underpinning to good business decision making. Management concepts that can be related to promoting ethics are agency theory, ethical climate theory and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Furthermore ethical sport policy is used for the promotion of ethics in sport. The sports sector however can’t be seen as just another business as it has a number of specific characteristics, requiring a special approach regarding ethics and corporate responsibility. Ethics and sport are entangled in a difficult relation. While ethics aims at the good, sport aims at the best, which can represent a difficult balance. In this paper we explore how ethics in sport can be managed, keeping in mind the intense professionalization of the sports sector. Furthermore we analyse the Flemish sport policy measures in the area of ethics. In future research we aim to study the effectiveness of the different tools used in Flanders. We explain the goals and approach of our future research and address other potential research questions.
