In this contribution, we want to discuss the role that the Brussels rhetoricians played in the organization of joyous entries and other festivities such as the baptism of a princess. More specifically, we will show how Jan Smeken – who was the city poet from 1485 until his death in 1517 – and some of the rhetoricians closest to him (Johannes Pertcheval, Jan van den Dale) took the lead in the organization and how they involved the four chambers ...
In this contribution a fourteenth-century fragment (Leiden, UB, BPL 2387 D) of Jacob van Maerlant’s Historie van Troyen (ca. 1264) is edited for the first time. The fragment is written by the Brabantine Ferguut-scribe and consists of two parchment strips that belonged to the same folio. The sixty – mostly remnants of – verses are situated in a passage that Maerlant borrowed from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Until now this passage was known only through ...
The study of ancient cultures is hindered by the incomplete survival of material artifacts, so we commonly underestimate the diversity of cultural production in historic societies. To correct this survivorship bias, we applied unseen species models from ecology to gauge the loss of narratives from medieval Europe, such as the romances about King Arthur. The estimates obtained are compatible with the scant historic evidence. In addition to events ...
Among the many books in Michigan State University’s Criminology Collection is a Corpus juris militaris, published in Germany in 1687. Its binding contains four small parchment strips with medieval Dutch verses. Although the strips are still attached in the spine, the verses can be identified as belonging to the Roman der Lorreinen, and more specifically as remnants of manuscript A, written in the duchy of Brabant in the second quarter of the ...
Kritische editie en studie van een wijd verspreide, maar nauwelijks bestudeerde middeleeuwse rijmtekst die de chronologie voor Christus beoogt samen te vatten.
This article provides a first description, edition and analysis of Antwerp, University Library, Special Collections, MAG-P 64.19. This fragment is the sole known remnant of a Middle Dutch compilation of stories about Alexander the Great copied by the well-known Ferguut scribe (ca.1350). Our research shows that this compilation comprised Dutch versions of the Voeux du paon and the twelfth-century Fuerre de Gadres, which was previously unknown to ...
