"Functional characterization of mammalian LonP2, a peroxisomal AAA protease" KU Leuven
Peroxisomes are cell organelles involved in a variety of metabolic pathways, such as the β-oxidation of fatty acids, oxidative deamination of D-amino acids, and oxidation of many other compounds, including glycolic acid and polyamines. All these pathways comprise H2O2-producing oxidases, and therefore, large amounts of H2O2, a reactive oxygen species (ROS), are produced inside the peroxisome. Despite the presence of a few anti-oxidative ...
Characterizing a rupture-prone mouse model of aortic aneurysm: the road to post-mortem validation of AAA rupture risk predicted by biomechanical computational models Ghent University
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a local dilatation of the aorta that can lead to sudden death when it ruptures. Patients are currently operated when the aneurysmatic diameter exceeds 5.5 cm. In this project, we want to investigate whether numerical techniques can characterize and predict the actual rupture incidence and location in a novel, rupture-prone mouse model of the disease.

Revealing the ancient plant ethylene biosynthesis and ACC signaling pathway KU Leuven
When ancestral plants colonized the land 450 million years ago, they needed to adapt to harsh environmental conditions when giving up their aquatic lifestyle. I hypothesize that during this water-to-land transition, the volatile plant hormone ethylene became an important growth regulator to face terrestrial stressors. In fact, modern-day crops use ethylene to regulate stress responses, and perhaps ethylene served this role in pioneering land ...
Onderzoek naar het leren van de 21-century skills aan de hand van virtual reality KU Leuven
Virtual Reality (VR) is becoming a more sort out tool in the educational sector. VR provides a cost efficient method to learn and train skills in a controlled environment, which also allows for the collection of quantitative data, which in the real world might be harder to collect or examine. The ability to continuously train without having to reset, replace or buy more materials or hardware is an important advantage. Educational institutions ...
Structural and surface integrity assessment of multi-material components produced via wire and arc additive manufacturing KU Leuven
Wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) stands out by providing high production capacity and manufacturing flexibility for additive manufacturing of large components. As-built and machined multi-material components are in demand. Multi-material additive manufacturing is always a challenge due to structural and surface integrity limitations and the difficulty of machining. Consequently, it is imperative to interpret the results of the ...
ACC, a novel signaling molecule in plants, not just the precursor of ethylene! Ghent University
A major challenge in sustainable agriculture is to secure crop productivity under adverse environmental conditions in order to match the growing world population. Plants are exposed to multiple abiotic stresses such as submergence -an increasing problem due to global climate change- and cadmium accumulation in soil, resulting in important crop losses. Ethylene is known to be a crucial player in stress control. The non-proteinogenic ...
