Complex waveforms and microwave systems for characterization and actuation at the single-cell level in life sciences KU Leuven
Microwave concepts are increasingly being used in microfluidic devices to advance detection, monitoring and actuation of liquid mixtures in lab-on-a-chip applications thanks to earlier research that demonstrated capabilities of microwave sensing and heating. A promising way to fight cancer in the early stages, among other diseases, is through information carried by single cells and extracellular vesicles (EVs). However, extracting this ...
MOde-localized mass Sensors with Thermal Actuation and Piezoresistive DEtection KU Leuven
Micro/nano-electromechanical system (M/NEMS) resonant mass sensors have attracted utmost interest over the past two decades. This is due to their wide range of applications, especially in biochemistry, for instance weighing single molecules, nanoparticles, and even monitoring the growth of living cells. However, their performance is significantly decreased when operated at ambient air and measurements take a considerable time. Therefore, ...
Actuoids: guided tissue morphogenesis using soft actuation KU Leuven
Actuoids proposes to engineer modular, mechanically actuated oganoids from human pluripotent stem cells (hPsCs) using technologies inspired by soft robotics, thereby providing novel synthetically engineered multicellular neural tissues at unprecedented scale and maturity
FO-SPR continuous biosensing with electrically actuated nanoswitches KU Leuven
The research project is aimed at designing and studying a molecular nanoswitch-based fiber-optic (FO)-SPR. This includes the functionalization of the sensor surface through aptamer-based molecular nanoswitches, their electrical actuation and the demonstration of continuous biosensing with FO-SPR in biological fluids with good stability, specificity, sensitivity.

Biofabrication of remotely actuated skeletal implants using magnetically augmented cartilage-microtissues in alginate microcapsules KU Leuven
This research would involve the generation of microencapsulated stem cell populations within engineered fabricated hydrogels via microfluidic devices for the formation of cartilaginous microtissues. Modular biofabrication strategies will be then explored for this setup.
