Integrated modeling framework for biotechnical systems KU Leuven
The PhD student will develop an integrated modeling framework for biotechnological systems, which includes both the reactor dynamics and the intracellular biological dynamics with systems biology models. He/she will then build upon existing approaches in stochastic and model predictive control to develop tailored estimation and control algorithms for these models.

Biomechanical and Structural Characterization of Bridging Veins KU Leuven
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the fourth leading cause of death and a major cause of disability in the Western world. This dissertation focuses on a specific type of TBI, i.e. acute subdural hematoma caused by bridging vein (BV) rupture. This occurs when the relative motion between the brain and the skull causes a BV, that connects or “bridges” these two structures, to rupture. The etiology of this pathology can be investigated through ...
Research into the role of Biomechanical strain in the occurrence of osteochondrosis in the dog. Ghent University
Osteochondrosis (OC) is a multifactorial orthopaedic condition that is an important
cause of lameness in dogs. The exact pathophysiology remains unclear, but several
factors indicate that biomechanical loading of the joint plays an important role.
The general aim of this PhD was to gain more insight in the role of biomechanical
loading in the development of OC lesions in dogs, more specifically at ...
Biomechanical Evaluation of a Personalized External Aortic Root Support applied in the Ross Procedure KU Leuven
In several cardiac interventions, pulmonary arterial tissue is exposed to systemic conditions. One of these procedures is the Ross procedure, which replaces a diseased aortic valve with the patient’s own pulmonary valve. A common complication hereby is the dilatation of this pulmonary autograft. Still, not all autografts fail and the decisive factor for autograft failure is not known. Several reinforcement strategies have been designed to ...
BIOMECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF BICYCLE ACCIDENTS RELATED HEAD INJURIES KU Leuven
Bridging Spatiotemporal Scales in Biomechanical Models for Living Tissues: From the Contracting Esophagus to Cardiac Growth Ghent University
Appropriate functioning of our body is determined by the mechanical behavior of our organs. An improved understanding of the biomechanical functioning of the soft tissues making up these organs is therefore crucial for the choice for, and development of, efficient clinical treatment strategies focused on patient-specific pathophysiology.
This doctoral dissertation describes the passive and active biomechanical behavior of ...
Does it all start with a head impact? Biomechanical analysis of post-traumatic neurodegenerative diseases KU Leuven
Neurodegenerative diseases form a large health problem worldwide for which currently no treatment exists. Neurodegeneration is related to the spreading of toxic misfolded proteins (prions) through the brain, causing cell death. Lots of studies have approached this complex problem from a clinical, biological or molecular point of view, but the mechanisms behind the development of these diseases are still poorly understood. This project will ...
