Design for assembly meaning : a study on how to facilitate a more intuitive manual assembly from a product design perspective Ghent University
Framework to redesign products with focus on design for assembly meaning : a PBL case study Ghent University
Generic simulation model for assembly line supply Ghent University
A simulation model for materials supply to mixed-model assembly lines will be discussed. The simulation model is created in FlexSim by means of an automatic model generator and demonstrates the in-plant logistical flows involved to supply parts from the warehouse to the assembly line. The results of the simulation model are compared to those of a deterministic mixed integer linear programming model. The findings of this study will be reported.
Automated Concept Design for Automatic Automotive Transmissions KU Leuven
Introduction / Objective The design of early stage concepts has a crucial impact on all following developments and optimization of a product. Generative engineering aims to support designers in discovering and choosing these concepts through computational means. A methodology for the generative discovery of planetary transmission designs is presented which supports efficient architecture (i.e. concept) generation, an automated synthesis approach ...
Design, Simulations and Tests of a Novel Force and Moments Sensor for Instrumented Knee Implants Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre
Objectives: Early identification of mechanical complications of total knee arthroplasties is of great importance to minimize the complexity and iatrogenicity of revision surgeries. There is therefore a critical need to use smart knee implants during intra or postoperative phases. Nevertheless, these devices are absent from commercialized orthopaedic implants, mainly due to their manufacturing complexity. We report the design, simulations and ...
Architecture and Sustainability: Critical Perspectives for Integrated Design KU Leuven
Architecture in its classical meaning is understood as a meaningful integration of the use (utilitas), stability (firmitas) and aesthetic beauty (venustas) through design for (re)making and (re)shaping of buildings, urban spaces and the built environment. Sustainability understood as a development paradigm aspires an integrative attitude towards the social, the economic and the environmental concerns to unfold development that "meets the needs ...
Vectors for the active uptake of nucleotides in bacterial cells - A model study for the delivery of XNA building blocks KU Leuven
Summary The central dogma of molecular biology relies on the storage, transfer and propagation of genetic information from DNA to protein via RNA. Synthetic genes have been widely used to create genetically modified organisms, for a number of applications in therapeutics, agriculture, energy and environment related fields, material science and biotechnology. However, due to accidental or deliberate damage triggering from the exchange of genetic ...
Degeneracy and Networked Buffering: principles for supporting emergent evolvability in agile manufacturing systems Vrije Universiteit Brussel
This article introduces new principles for improving upon the design and implementation of agile manufacturing and assembly systems. It focuses particularly on challenges that arise when dealing with novel conditions and the associated requirements of system evolvability, e.g. seamless reconfigurability to cope with changing production orders, robustness to failures and disturbances, and modifiable user-centric interfaces. Because novelty in ...
Simulation-driven parameter study of concentric Halbach cylinders for magnetorheological robotic grasping Hasselt University KU Leuven
Due to their peculiar property of controlled stiffness and strength under an external magnetic field, magnetorheological (MR) fluids show great potential in developing hybrid robotic grippers that in the future could offer the same versatility as the human hand. This demands for sufficiently strong, compact and switchable magnetic field sources for which permanent magnets are often overshadowed by electromagnets. However, permanent magnets ...
