Research Equipment: BD LSRFortessa TM flowcytometer Ghent University
The research of both the 'Laboratory for Translational Research in Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases' as the 'Tumor Immunology Lab' encompasses a critical mass of activities that warrants the isntallation of a new, high-performance flowcytometer within our direct research environment.
A flow cytometer to perform multiparameter sorting, including single-cell deposition under biohazard conditions L2 Ghent University
Flowcytometry and cell sorting is indispensable for research in cellular immunology. Using flowcytometry, it is possible to discriminate and isolate morphologically identical cells based on the expression of a set of membrance proteins. This technique will be used to analyse and isolate T and NK cells and precursors thereof and to sort experimentally infected HIV cells.
Elucidating the immunomodulatory role of sex hormones in asthma Ghent University
Before puberty, asthma prevalence is highest in boys but there is a sharp decrease during puberty. Two thirds of adult asthma patients are female, who typically have a more severe phenotype and a lower quality of life compared to men. In addition to genetic and environmental factors these data suggest a pivotal role of sex hormones, namely testosterone (T), in the pathogenesis of asthma.

Cofunding core facility - Flow cytometry Ghent University
A basic Flow cytometry infrastructure available to every UGent researcher, SOC' researcher and external researchers that, through immediately available training and guidance, allows in a quality (accurate and reproducible) manner both basic (pre-analytical) analyses and in-depth innovative immunological analyses and cell sorting in the most optimal financial and operational conditions.
Sjögren’s Syndrome Pathophysiology Investigating Trial: the SSPIT concept Ghent University
This project focuses on underlying mechanisms leading to onset of primary Sjogren’s syndrome with focus on transition of asymptomatic autoantibody positive individuals to full blown disease. We will examine glycosylation profiles of autoantibodies and perform high end flowcytometry and singlecell
RNA sequencing in various phases of the disease. This will permit to delineate the ideal stage for immune intervention.
Rapid ex-vivo detection, quantification and characterisation of cell-mediated immune responses induced by natural infection or vaccination with SARS-CoV-2 orr other pathogens. Ghent University
Development of a rapid, sensitive, and reproducible method for the ex-vivo detection, quantification and characterization of cell-mediated immune responses induced by natural infection or vaccination. This method will hopefully enable us to replace the applied laborious and expensive methodologies thereby increasing the applicability of these types of immune monitoring methods in large (field) trials. This simplified method will allow for ...

The role of regulatory T cells and Th1/Th17/Th22 cells in the pathogenesis of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Non-Alcoholic SteatoHepatitis in mice and humans. University of Antwerp
Study of dynamics and prediction value of inflammatory serum markers in an acute Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae infection in pigs Ghent University
This doctoral research is part of an SBO project: "Early warning monitoring system for Prediction of disease Outcome and for design of life Saving therapy in sepsis and inflammation" (EPOS) and emphasizes the realization of an infection model in the pig leading to the identification and kwantification of (anti) inflammatory markers in serum with the ability to predict (outcome of) disease.
