Method in madness Ghent University
In the Enlightenment tradition, the faculty of reason was viewed as a defining characteristic of man, and irrationality was put in stark opposition to reason. This project goes beyond this traditional dualistic conception and aims to integrate irrationality in the framework of naturalized epistemology, which recognizes human reason as a biological faculty acquired over a long process of evolution.
Control of feline enteric coronavirus in Flemish shelters and catteries to prevent feline infectious peritonitis Ghent University
WWith a research project, my lab wants to lay the foundation to realize this combined approach of diagnosis and prevention. This will be done by investigating which variants of the harmless, but causative, felien enterisch coronavirus (FECV) occur in Flanders, which mutations are at the basis of the FIP development, which management measures are most effective to reduce the FECV circulation in shelters and farms, and by which testing ...

Individual variability in functional human brain organization Ghent University
No two humans are alike. Since our personality, behaviour and cognitive skills are governed by the brain, one would be equally hard-pressed to find two human brains that are completely identical. Yet virtually every functional neuroimaging study aggregates brain scans across all participants in their sample. While this approach yields an easily interpretable map of brain regions commonly activated by the mental process(es) of interest, it ...

Mechanisms and Diagnosis of Mast Cell and Basophil Activation in Rare Hypersensitivity Disorders KU Leuven
Hypersensitivity is an exaggerated response of the immune system to harmless triggers. In Type I hypersensitivity or allergy, effector cells (mast cells and basophils) are activated through allergen-induced cross-linking of surface-bound allergen-specific IgE antibodies, leading to degranulation and systemic release of inflammatory mediators. This can result in a potentially life-threatening rapid-onset clinical syndrome affecting the ...

The influence of graphite on chemical reactions: From on-surface characterization to bulk processes KU Leuven
Catalysis focuses on the increase of the rate and selectivity of chemical reactions, which is a core concept in the chemical industry. A lot of these catalysts consist of toxic metals and it would be a lot more sustainable if a harmless material could be used. In this context, carbon materials are gaining interest, being more sustainable and affordable than metal-based catalysts. Catalysis by
inert two-dimensional (2D) carbon ...
