Diagnosing neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation before iron starts to accumulate. Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Introduction
Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) consists of a heterogeneous group of disorders with brain iron accumulation as common radiological endpoint. Mutations in multiple genes have been associated with NBIA. We present 2 cases with a different type of NBIA, in whom the diagnosis was confirmed before brain iron accumulation became evident on MRI.

Intravenous Iron for the Treatment of Iron Deficiency in IBD: the Pendulum Is Swinging KU Leuven
Intravenous (IV) iron therapy has been a major asset in the management of refractory iron-deficiency anemia in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other diseases. However, the cost-effectiveness of parenteral substitution as the first-line treatment of this condition in IBD has been questioned. A study published by Reinisch et al. in this issue of the journal fails to show non-inferiority of iron isomaltose 1,000, a novel high-dose IV ...
Effects of oral or parenteral iron supplementation on haematological parameters, blood iron status and growth in newborn calves fed milk replacer Ghent University
BackgroundThis study aimed to assess the influence of early life iron supplementation on the haematological parameters of calves fed milk replacer on a high plane of nutrition. MethodsThirty calves were allocated to receive either a sham treatment (CON), injection of 1000 mg Fe3+ (INJ) or oral administration of 1050 mg Fe3+ (ORAL), all administered less than 1 hour after birth. Blood was obtained before treatment, on days 1, 3, 5 and 7 of life ...
Malaria and Iron Load at the First Antenatal Visit in the Rural South Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo: Is Iron Supplementation Safe or Could It Be Harmful? KU Leuven
We investigated the relationship between malaria infection and iron status in 531 pregnant women in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Sociodemographic data, information on morbidity, and clinical data were collected. A blood sample was collected at the first antenatal visit to diagnose malaria and measure serum ferritin (SF), soluble transferrin receptor, C-reactive protein, and α1-acid-glycoprotein. Malaria prevalence was 7.5%. ...

Effect of redox conditions on phosphate exchangeability and iron forms in a soil amended with ferrous iron Ghent University
Application of iron (Fe) -rich amendments to soils has been proposed as a means of decreasing phosphorus (P) losses from soils. However, anoxic conditions following soil saturation are known to increase Fe and P solubility in soils, thus cancelling out the potential benefits. Our aim was to evaluate the effects of continuous oxic, continuous anoxic and alternating anoxic/oxic conditions on P exchangeability and Fe forms in soil amended with ...
