Kinetic scale turbulence in collisionless magnetized plasmas: statistics, energy transfer and coherent structures KU Leuven
The term turbulence is used to describe a huge class of phenomena occurring in fluids, plasmas and other systems. Turbulence can be defined as a chaotic nonlinear process involving the transfer and reorganization of energy among different scales. Typically, turbulence is induced by a large scale driving force that provides energy to the system. Such energy is nonlinearly transferred to smaller and smaller scales, up to a point where it is ...
Broadband Stable Integral Equations Solvers for the Vector Potential Ghent University
Emerging technologies present existing modelling methods with unmet requirements. The complexity of electronic components, circuits and systems is ever increasing. In addition, novel manufacturing techniques such as 3D integrated circuits and 3D packaging are required to deliver high data rate, low latency designs with minimal power consumption. Multi-scale and multi-physics sources for THz radiation require the integrated design and ...

Combining experimental and computational approaches to investigate arrhythmogenic consequences of connexin hemichannel opening in the heart. Ghent University
The project starts with the in depth characterization of Cx43 hemichannels as channels commanded by
voltage, intracellular Ca2+ and mechanical forces (WP1). These data will be incorporated into an existing and
well acknowledged multi-scale model of the heart aiming to predict the effects of hemichannel opening on three
well chosen arrhythmia conditions described in WP2, WP3 & WP4. In these WPs, we test the ...
Advanced Modelling Methods for Electronic and Photonic Systems Ghent University
Modern devices are complex in their geometric and physical make-up and depend on the interplay between electromagnetics, electronics, and photonics. Modelling them calls for new techniques that are modular and multi-scale.
In order to overcome these challenges, we will develop integral equations based methods based on domain decompositions:
1. The development of modular integral equations based on the concept of multi-trace ...
Supramolecular Polymeric Solutions in Shear and Extensional Flows KU Leuven
The behaviour of transient polymer networks in strong flows is poorly understood.
Those transient polymer networks are candidates for, e.g. self-healing and recyclable materials, easily tunable viscosity modifiers, and stimuli-responsive materials with applications in foodstuff, coatings, cost-efficient processes or biomedical areas.
To explore their potential and define strategies for designing novel materials amenable to ...
SPATIO-TEMPORAL AND SPECIES-SPECIFIC MODELING OF DRYING AND DIMENSIONAL STABILITY OF TROPICAL WOOD Ghent University
This research focuses on drying tropical hardwood species more effectively and with higher yields. This will be done by using a mathematical model linking micro-, meso- and macro-level for dimensional changes under subsequent drying process conditions, calibrated using a matrix of quantifiable parameters derived from multi-scale mapping of the transient processes linked to physical and anatomical characterization of the wood.
Rethinking the dispersed city paradigm by exploring the strategic nodes of its spatial networks. Design strategies at the intermediate scale for the next urban constellation. KU Leuven
In the binary opposition of city and land, dispersed territories are often considered the unwanted ‘spillover’ effect of urbanisation. However, the dispersed spatial condition of Flanders, and by larger extent the area stretching from Lille (France) to Rotterdam (The Netherlands) cannot be categorised as a peri-urban condition and was therefore coined All City/All Land (AC/AL). On the contrary, it is a condition of urbanity beyond the ...
