Assaying the modern structural realism in science philosophy with the help of Alfred North Whitehead's way of thinking. Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Causality in cognitive science and philosophy of mind. University of Antwerp
Developing a context-sensitive support tool prototype for interdisciplinary research using contemporary insights from computational linguistics and philosophy of science. Ghent University
The aim of my project is to develop a tool for supporting interdisciplinary research. The tool consists of two modules: a language module which enables the disambiguation of concepts which are central to the interdisciplinary research, and a methodology module which allows to explicate (potentially conflicting) assumptions on ‘causation’ and ‘explanation’ held by the interdisciplinary research team members.
Interlevel causation from an interventionist point of view. Solving problems in the philosophy of mind and in the philosophy of the psychological sciences. University of Antwerp
The Origins of Early Anglophone Philosophy of Science: Debating Scientific Explanation Ghent University
After the introduction of Carl Hempel’s Covering Law model in 1948, scientific explanation became
a central topic of philosophical attention in early anglophone philosophy of science in the 1950s
and 1960s. During this period, philosophy of science became an academic subdiscipline, with its
own societies, journals and graduate programs. Though many contemporary philosophers of
science have distanced themselves from the ...
From natural philosophy to science: Euler's inquiry of nature viewed through his optics Ghent University
This project investigates the relationship between natural philosophy and philosophical developments of scientific criteria in the optics of Leonhard Euler (1707-1783). The central questions are: (i) Did Euler's account of optics, as well as his mathematisation of nature, lead to changes in the role of natural philosophy? (ii) Was the modern seperation of natural philosophy and science a consequence of this?
The use of adaptive logics for the practice and the philosophy of mathematics and the use of mathematical tools for the abstract analysis of adaptive logics Ghent University
This project concerns an investigation into three aspects of the relation between mathematics and adaptive logics (AL's): it is investigated how (a) AL's can be used for the formal modeling of the mathematical practice, (b) AL's can solve problems of the foundations of mathematics, and © mathematical techniques can be used for the abstract study of AL's.
The idea of distributive justice in seventeenth-century moral and political philosophy. KU Leuven
How to divide things fairly? Philosophers have been pondering this question under the heading of ‘distributive justice’ at least since Aristotle. It has recently been argued that the meaning of this term changed dramatically in the last 200 years.Today, distributive justice deals primarily with the fair division of benefits and burdens arising from social cooperation. It gives citizens a right to material goods based on need or effort. Yet ...
