Structural elaboration techniques in L2 vocabulary learning: estimating the effect of metalinguistic contemplation on memory representation Ghent University
This research project aims to take the measure of what contemplation of the form-meaning fit of new words can do to foster new L2 word learning. Form-meaning motivation means that a retrospective explanation can be sought as to why a linguistic unit has come in a particular form or carries a particular meaning. These form-meaning associations has been shown to facilitate the retrieval of new words.
Sectoral spillovers in the macroeconomy KU Leuven
Macroeconomists are typically concerned with changes in aggregate economic activity. Traditionally, the drivers of these aggregate fluctuations are considered to also be of aggregate nature, such as productivity, aggregate demand or monetary policy shocks. Most of the literature on economic fluctuations outright disregards the possibility of microeconomic shocks to specific sectors or firms to generate relevant aggregate fluctuations. A ...

global economies. Controlling such epidemics is challenging, and in such a
complex environment, potential mitigation strategies need to be evaluated
using geospatial epidemiological models. The limited availability of case reports
during emerging epidemics complicates the fitting of such models.
Furthermore, the uncertainty about the ...

Chromatin structure analysis of rare likely pathogenic inherited Copy Number Variants KU Leuven
Chromatin structure has been shown to play important roles in the orchestration of gene expression programs during development. Spatio-temporal specific cis-regulatory sequences often lie at a long distance from the gene(s) they regulate, requiring spatial chromatin folding to move them in close proximity of their target promoters and fine-tune the time, place and level of gene expression. Interestingly, several whole-genome chromatin ...
A memory approach towards understanding age-related sensitivities in language learning Ghent University
Compared to adults, children appear to be better at learning language. The precise reason why has proven difficult to comprehend. The goal of the present research project is to address this question from a memory-based perspective. We hypothesize that age-dependent sensitivities in language learning are due to a shift from reliance on procedural memory (PM) which is specialized for the implicit learning of sequential properties in language ...

Locally probing the magneto-structure of adatoms on graphene using radioions KU Leuven
Scientific state of the art
Solid state physics in reduced dimensionality is, more than a trend, a truly new working ground for contemporary research. The recent advent of nanoscience and nanotechnology (3-dimensional towards 1-dimensional and 0-dimensional) is a clear manifestation of that; graphene (and related 2-dimensional materials) is probably the richest and most recent one [1-5]. In fact, low dimensionality in ...
