Flaminco aims to manufacture an economical production chain for the extrusion-based additive of small series of large structural plastic products (focusing on PVC and widening the process possibilities for other thermoplastics). Within the project, the barriers within the total production chain will be systematically investigated: developing cheap additives, compounded filaments with optimal properties, 3D printing with open-source printers ...
In this PhD research polyolefins are investigated regarding their potential usage in the extrusion based Additive Manufacturing technology. Since these polymers tend to have high shrinkage coefficients due to their high crystallinity, tailor-made polymers will be produced by means of melt-compounding low-crystalline polymers with certain fillers. Additionally, various methods to improve the strength of manufactured parts are evaluated.
Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are materials of which the composition, microstructure or porosity gradually varies over the volume. This allows tailoring (combinations of) macroscopic properties to meet specific non-homogeneous service requirements that conventional homogeneous materials cannot accomplish. Particularly in dental implant applications, emerging ceramic materials exhibiting a compositional gradient from a tough (short-term ...
The aim of this research project with ESA is to propose and demonstrate a new method to develop and test a new aluminium alloy with high mechanical properties for Additive Manufacturing (AM); avoiding the classic development route.
This PhD research aims at developing a fundamental understanding of the liquid melt pool formation during laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) of metals. By developing and using advanced numerical process modelling and by applying in-situ melt pool monitoring techniques, a sound and technical relation between L-PBF process parameters and melt pool characteristics will be developed, enabling a better understanding of suitable process conditions for ...
Powder-based Additive Manufacturing (AM) includes Laser Sintering (LS) and Multi-jet Fusion (MJF). In the past, LS was mainly a rapid prototyping technique. By now it has evolved into a true manufacturing technique for complex, specialty products. Several polymers are suited as starting material for LS but polyamide 12 (PA12) is most often used. The build tray of an LS machine is filled with PA12 powder, kept at a temperature a few degrees ...
The current production of tooth restorations in zirconia involves classic CAD/CAM milling of presintered zirconia blocks, which wastes material, introduces machining defects and limits the potential for individual aesthetic characterization unless a zirconia core is veneered with porcelain; during clinical functioning the latter bi-layered structure unfortunately results too often in chipping defects. Additive manufacturing, i.e. 3D-printing ...
