Addressing Limitations of Language Models
Applications that automatically process language and/or speech are numerous, including, but not limited to: Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), Machine Translation, Speech Translation, Spelling Correction, Natural Language Understanding and Natural Language Generation. Every application typically needs a special-purpose system and datasets with task-specific labels, but there is one common ...

Preverbal indefinite subjects in spoken and written French KU Leuven
1. Background and status quaestionis
Informal (mostly spoken) (henceforth IF) and formal (typically written) French (henceforth FF) are quite different. Some authors even speak of a diglossic situation and argue in favor of the co-existence of two different grammars in French (e.g. Klein 2012; Rowlett 2013). This opposition between IF and FF is particularly evident with the expression of the subject of the clause. Whereas ...
Form and function in usage-based construction grammar: A semantic/pragmatic analysis of clause-internal irrelevance marking in German. Ghent University
German W-immer/auch-connectives occur in universal concessive conditionals, nonspecific free relatives, and elliptical constructions. By analyzing both formal and semantic/pragmatic differences between these constructions, I will demonstrate that a more precise characterization of a construction’s function is required in order to distinguish formally similar constructions in the constructional network and explain subtle differences between ...
Soft tissue biomechanics: In vitro, in vivo and silico trials for trauma prevention and repair KU Leuven
The soft tissues in our body are continuously engaged in mechanical interaction, with themselves but also with external devices. These devices may serve to protect (e.g. a helmet), repair (e.g. surgical instruments) or replace (e.g. prostheses) our native tissues. Profound knowledge about the mechanical behavior of these tissues and their interactions is essential to optimize the design of these external devices and treatments, and to ...
How extension works: Determinants of the extension of grammatical and lexical items in English and Dutch. KU Leuven
Extension is the process whereby a linguistic item spreads to new lexical or grammatical environments. This research plan lays out a model of extension, explaining why an item can extend to a given environment at a given time. It formulates three interrelated hypotheses on the starting point, course and end point of extension. The hypotheses are tested on four corpus−based case studies covering different domains of grammar. The focus is on ...

Deciphering the localization dynamics of BRI1-mediated signaling by the proteome Ghent University
Here, we will use the brassinosteroid hormone receptor, BRI1, as a model to define the molecular framework of the interaction between signaling and endocytosis. By combining proteomics approach with genetic and chemical perturbations we will identify the endocytic machinery of BRI1 which, when combined with known signaling components, will allow us to develop an integrated model of receptor-mediated signaling and endocytosis in plants.
