The influenza virus endonuclease: an innovative target for antiviral therapy. KU Leuven
Influenza viruses cause seasonal epidemics as well as pandemic outbreaks, associated with huge economic costs and significant morbidity and mortality, particularly in elderly or frail individuals. The widely recommended influenza vaccines require annual updates and provide inadequate protection, especially in immunocompromised and elderly persons, which are both steadily growing populations. In addition, vaccination cannot counteract the ...
The evolutionary causes and consequences of normative conformity KU Leuven
Human culture spreads between people and changes through time, in a process analogous to genetic evolution. Conformity, the tendency to adopt majority culture, is a vital force shaping this cultural evolution process. Conformity is known to be adaptive if it allows individuals to quickly adjust to local conditions. However, conformity is often not about obtaining environmental information, but about fitting in with prevailing social norms. ...
Embracing diversity: A multi-method study of the social inclusion and school success of minority youth KU Leuven
Desegregated schools were once thought to be the solution for children from disadvantaged groups. Research has shown the benefits of school diversity (one result of desegregation) for minority students by creating wider and richer peer networks. Yet, diversity may have a downside if school environments (implicitly or overtly) communicate that minority identities are devalued. Then, minority students can feel more socially rejected and more ...
Crustacean Cell Cultures: Strengthening IP position and preparation of license track (CruCell) Ghent University
Growing crustacean cells in vitro is up to now not possible. In the past two years, Prof. Nauwynck and his team have succeeded in developing a new medium (HaNaMoRa medium) that supports shrimp cell proliferation in vitro. Lab proof of concept has been obtained for the medium and for the in vitro culture of different types of shrimp cells. A patent application was filed in January 2022.
The aim of this project is to finetune the ...
Uncertain about my abilities. How stereotype-related processes affect the clarity, confidence, and stability of the ability self-concept KU Leuven
While researchers have been aware of the disproportionate drop-out among minoritized groups during crucial stages of their education and work trajectory for some time, the potential role of certainty of the ability self-concept in relation to these unequal outcomes has been underexamined. This is despite indications that the ability to clearly, confidently, and consistently view one’s abilities is crucial for pursuit in a domain, and ...

PaPiOM: Patterns in Pitch organization in music Ghent University
Music is present in every culture in the world. We as a species seem to have an urge to make music. While the diversity of music cultures around the world is phenomenal, they do seem to have patterns in common. Especially for pitch, one of the fundamental building blocks of music, there are strong reasons to believe that there are commonalities amongst cultures on how pitch is organised A better insight in these common patterns may help to ...
