Geoarchaeology and palaeoDEMs modelling to assess the archaeological potential of Ravenna and its hinterland. Ghent University
The project will focus on the reconstruction of the evolution of alluvial landscapes, resulting in the creation of palaeoDEMs for different chronological periods, from which to produce maps of archaeological potential. Ravenna and part of the Romagna region have been selected as case study, while mainly geological and archaeological data will be used.
Unlocking the potential of invisible stratigraphy - geoarchaeology as the key to understanding early medieval urbanisation in Scandinavia and the Southern North Sea Area Vrije Universiteit Brussel
sources documenting urban life are limited, and past archaeological studies have focused predominantly on long-distance trade and economy. In many of these towns, excavation has become impossible due to their protected heritage status or because ...

Special Research Fund Professorship in bioarchaeology - physical anthropology - evolutionary anthropology Ghent University
A professorship granted by the Special Research Fund is a primarily research-oriented position and is made available for excellent researchers with a high-quality research programme.
Geomorphological, quaternary geology and geological study of the northeastern Alentejo (Portalegre, Portugal), in geo-archaeological perspective. Ghent University
Fueling the Furnace. An interdisciplinary study of forest soils as geoarchaeological archives Ghent University
This project aims at investigating the early medieval exploitation of forests for charcoal production in a comprehensive, interdisciplinary manner. Through a synergy between archaeology, pedology, geostatistics, mineralogy and geochronology, it seeks to significantly improve our understanding and methodological approach towards the potential of woodland soils as archives of human-landscape interaction, with particular reference to processes ...
The settlement of Elkab: Documenting the Rise of Urbanism in an Upper Egyptian town KU Leuven
The ancient Egyptian site of Elkab lies on the east bank of the Nile in southern Upper Egypt and was an important provincial centre during the early stages of Egyptian history. Despite over a century of intensive archaeological research, our knowledge of its occupational history is still limited and biased. Indeed, past research has primarily focused on the large funerary and religious monuments and little attention has been devoted to the ...
Welcome to the Dark Side - disclosing the invisible stages of medieval urbanisation through the integrated study of European Dark Earths Vrije Universiteit Brussel
common phenomenon in European towns. They cover large surfaces
and are often rich in archaeological remains. Their seeming absence
of stratigraphy has in the past resulted in a lack of research or their
discarding. Meanwhile, geoarchaeological research has
demonstrated that Dark Earths contain highly valuable information
impossible to access ...
