Sabbatical Dirk Nuyens: Discovering future goals of lattice based cubature. KU Leuven
The aim of the sabbatical is to make large progress on a joint project and to start defining future goals based on early results from the scope of the project. The project is developing new theory and analyzes new algorithms for calculating expected values, and otheer miments of quantities of interest, obtained form complicated mathematical models.
From goals to habits and back: development and override of habitual decisions Ghent University
Many of our choices are habitual. Choices such as the route you take to work every day are at first selected because they yield the best outcome (the fastest route). However, after making the same choice day after day, it becomes automatic. Habits provide a shortcut between the environment (the road) and the choice (the route to work) without using cognitive resources to weigh potential alternatives. But this shortcut means that when the ...
Once sustainable, always sustainable? Pro-environmental spillover behaviour: effects of conscious and nonconscious environmental goal pursuit and environmental goal importance. Ghent University
Behavioural science has identified several interventions that increase the likelihood of sustainable choices. For example, putting a vegetarian product on a visible in-store location enhances sales of that product. In this project I look at when and how effects of a behavioural intervention in a specific purchase context spills over to consecutive purchase decisions. I demonstrate that the direction of the spillover effect is critically ...
Internet of Animals: Wireless Spatio-Temporal Observation of Dairy Goats Using Unsupervised Deep Learning Ghent University
The dairy goat industry has been growing quickly, in Flanders it already houses over 26 000 animals, which produce over 30 million liters of milk annually. As the industry becomes more commercialized the customers become more concerned with the overall welfare of livestock and farmers are looking to further increase the profit margins. This creates a need for wireless monitoring systems that can provide the farmers with real-time insights ...
Towards explaining and restoring dysfunctional affect dynamics in depression: the role of sub-optimal goal constellations. KU Leuven
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a highly prevalent and debilitating mental disorder, marked by severe emotional disturbances. Besides alterations in average levels of positive and negative affect, these disturbances are evident in the dynamical patterns with which MDD patients’ affect unfolds over time. Although there is fair consensus that these dysfunctional affect dynamics constitute an important perpetuating mechanism in MDD, the ...
A new look at performance monitoring through the goggles of goal relevance and its impact on the FRN ERP component Ghent University
Performance monitoring (PM) is a very important psychological process in every-day life situations.
PM is usually achieved through the processing of internal (mental) states or values, or external
(feedback-related) events or behavioral incentives available in the environment when internal
information is lacking. The latter refers to cases where human subjects have to process external
feedback information in order to ...
Understanding emotional attention from an emotion regulation goal perspective. Ghent University
We examine the idea that emotion regulation goals cause and modulate attentional biases to emotional information. Based on this idea, we predict that what stimuli will be attended (e.g., positive or negative) and how attention might be deployed (i.e., towards or away) will depend on the emotion regulation goal at stake.
