The project analyzes the establishment of global racial barriers on migration, the formation of irregular migration networks, the attempts by states to regulate migration transnationally and the central role of shipping companies in this process during the first period of accelerated globalization (1882-1938). It compares this for Pacific and Atlantic migration to the US and how this affected migration policies in the Americas.

Accessibility of substance abuse treatment for persons with a migration background: A qualitative analysis of five treatment centers and problem users with a migration background in Flanders, Belgium Ghent University
We examine social mechanisms and factors linking the cumulative effect of socio-economic disadvantage and substance abuse service disparities for users with a migration background. We study the following hypothesis: "disparities in substance abuse services arise when disadvantages in the health care system interact with those in the community system" (Alegria, 2011: 377) in a cross-case analysis of five treatment facilities.
