Sustainable Mining Research Network (CicloMin): competences for transforming environmental mining liabilities into sustainable development assets KU Leuven
This project tackles the issue of environmental mining liabilities (EML) in Peru, and reinforces the country’s institutionality for reducing the vulnerability of populations and ecosystems facing contamination hazards from long-term exposure to mine tailings. In Peru, a total of 6903 EML have been officially registered, of which around 2800 correspond to mining waste and tailings . These residues contaminate water sources, soils and air, and ...
Landlessness and Collective Violent REsistance to Mining Induced Displacement and Resettlement (MIDR) in Developing Countries: The Case of Anti-Phulbari Coal Mining Movement in Bangladesh Ghent University
This research project explores the role of landless people in collective resistance to Mining-Induced Displacement and Resettlement (MIDR)caused by the Phulbari Coal Mining project (Bangladesh). It explores the relationship between landlessness, forced displacement, exclusion, and collective resistance to fill a gap in MIDR scholarship, which has almost exclusively paid attention to effects of MIDR on people with formal land-rights.

Remote sensing-based mapping and monitoring of mangrove changes at tin mining areas in Bangka, Indonesia Ghent University
Mangrove forests in Indonesia, especially in Bangka Island, are threatened by deforestation and degradation driven by aquaculture, agriculture, palm oil plantations, and tin mining. This study uses satellite and inventory data to monitor mangrove extent and health from 1989 to 2022, identifying significant drivers of mangrove loss. This information can inform conservation, management, and restoration efforts in the region.
