The Mortality Constraint KU Leuven
HISSTER (STAGE 2). Development of a database of 19th and 20th century Belgian mortality statistics available at the local level Ghent University
HISSTER aims to generate and develop a central database of historical statistics concerning Belgian mortality available at the local level since 1830. While the 20th century was the main focus of the first stage of development of the database, stage 2 is primarily concerned with the 19th century statistics.
Sparse predictive modeling techniques with applications in insurance pricing and mortality forecasting KU Leuven
The insurance sector relies heavily on data for a variety of their operational processes such as product pricing, marketing and estimating future expenses. As today's society generates data more rapidly than ever before, the demand for new algorithms, able to infer meaningful information from this data, is rising. A modern issue in insurance is that data sets not only contain a lot of observations, but also many variables of different types. ...
Multipurpose bacilli for the prophylaxis of the Early Mortality Syndrome in shrimp farming Ghent University
Since 2009 people have been confronted with the new disease Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) during shrimp farming on an industrial scale - especially in Asia. Estimated annual losses amount to more than 1 billion dollars. Solutions for this disease are urgently needed as there are no commercially available treatments to date. At the Aquaculture & ARC Lab we have succeeded in designing a strategy to prevent the disease. The aim of the ...
The IMPACT model explaining trends in coronary heart disease morbidity and mortality and examining future policy options. Implementation in Belgium. Ghent University
The IMPACT model will be used to explain the recent decline in CHD mortality and morbidity in Belgium and Flanders. Secondly, we will make a projection of future CHD burden in order to get an overview of the interventions with the greatest potential in reducing the CHD burden. Finally, a cost-effectiveness analyses of different strategies will be performed.
Unveiling the relative contribution of carbon starvation and hydraulic failure in relation to the water use strategy of angiosperm species during drought induced tree mortality. Ghent University
As global change-type droughts are expected to lead to increasing forest mortality events, this research will focus on hydraulic failure and carbon starvation in different functional tree types subjected to different drought intensities. Special attention will be paid to internal CO2 as a carbon storage pool enabling woody tissue photosynthesis, a feature which has often been overlooked in mortality studies.
The formation of metastases is the main cause of cancer-related mortality Ghent University
The formation of metastases is the main cause of cancer-related mortality (90%). Strikingly, no effective anti-metastatic therapy is available in the clinic yet. N-Cadherin (NCad) is a protein that is abnormally active in metastatic tumors and helps them spread. The current project aims at developing molecules which can block NCad in patients.
Disturbed energy metabolism in critical illness: role in organ failure and mortality, underlying mechanisms, and therapeutic perspectives. KU Leuven
The central aim of this research project is to thoroughly characterize the mitochondrial abnormalities during critical illness, with elucidation of a number of detrimental or protective mechanisms embedded in the ultimate goal of improving patient care and outcome. The results are anticipated to be of multidisciplinary importance, of interest not only to critical illness but also diabetes and every field of medicine with an organ-specific ...
