The fundamental neurophysiological organization of auditory intensity perception: Unravelling the role of primary auditory perception, gating and attention. Ghent University
Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that has been associated with auditory intensity perception deficits. To date, the audiological and neurophysiological background of these perception deficits is unknown. Our group will investigate the functioning of modality-specific gating mechanisms, in relation to primary auditory perception and attention. This proposal comprises fundamental and interdisciplinary research in ...
Perceptions of the Seriousness of Crime Phenomena among the Public and Criminal Justice Officials: What Is Their Impact on Criminal Policy Preferences and the Impact of Evidence on Such Perceptions and Preferences? KU Leuven
Does attention to the body influence symptom perception? An experimental evaluation of hypervigilance and its impact on the perception of esophageal sensations. KU Leuven
Functional esophageal disorders are a class of gastrointestinal disorders where no organic abnormality explaining the symptoms can be identified. This disconnect between symptom perception and physiological abnormalities results in adverse disease outcomes. Given the impact of psychological processes on the gastrointestinal tract through the brain-gut axis, research has shifted towards identifying their potential role in modulating ...
Neurophysiological relationship between sound intensity perception and hypophonic speech production in Parkinson's disease: unraveling the role of primary auditory perception, gating and attention. Ghent University
The aim of this proposal is to assess the role of primary auditory perception in hypophonic speech production in Parkinson’s disease (PD). 50 PD patients and 50 normal control subjects will be auditorily and neurophysiologically tested. The effect of gating and attention on speech perception and production will be studied.
Holistic vs. analytic visual perception of human body postures and actions: Similarities and differences with face perception. KU Leuven
Like human faces, human bodies can provide important visual information for social communication and interaction. It is generally assumed that human faces are processed holistically and not only analytically: Local facial features are not perceived and represented independently of each other; instead, a face is perceived as an integrated whole. One observation that has been taken as evidence for holistic face processing is the face inversion ...
Racial discrimination in pain care: an examination of the role of healthcare providers' racial evaluations and enacted behaviors, as well as pain sufferer's perceptions and expectations about racial discrimination Ghent University
Receiving quality pain care is a human right. Unfortunately, evidence suggests that the extent to which pain sufferers can appeal to this right often depends on their race. Indeed, extant evidence indicates that, compared to the racial majority, racial minorities are less likely to receive appropriate pain care. In countries where the racial majority is White, such disparities have been frequently found when comparisons were made between ...
Citizens' perceptions on the ethics of health technology innovations: Recommendations for ethically responsible design, development and use KU Leuven
Health Technology Innovations (HTI) are shaping healthcare in many ways and are exemplified in applications such as treatment (e.g. gene therapy, vaccines), testing (e.g. toxicology modelling, drug testing), materials used in treatments (e.g. nanotechnologies, biomaterials), equipment and devices (e.g. robotics), information gathering and diagnostics (e.g. AI imaging applications for diagnosis), and procedures. Generically, HTIs can be ...
Public attitudes towards and experiences with plural policing actors: perceptions of legitimacy and procedural justice Ghent University
In addition to the police, various public and private policing actors now perform functions aimed at preventing and combating nuisance and crime. The increased deployment and visibility of private security personnel, community wardens, and stewards in the (semi-)public space has also led to an increase in contact between citizens and such security professionals.
Despite this observation, there is a clear lack of Belgian criminological ...
Sowing the seeds of adaptation: a pan-European study on agricultural resilience, assessing experiences and perceptions of climate change among actors across different sectors Ghent University
Climate change (CC) is posing a challenge for agriculture worldwide, but producers’ and consumers’ perspectives are often overlooked in scientific research. This study addresses this gap by assessing perceptions and experiences of CC impacts and adaptation strategies among different actors along the value chain and across different regions and sectors of the European agrifood sector. To this end, this research involves interviews with ...
